About

What TypeWithin is, and how we work

TypeWithin is a psychology-based self-assessment platform. We publish short, research-grounded tests — each returning an instant personalized report — and plain-language articles that explain the ideas behind them.

What we make

Our current library covers three areas: the attachment style test, the neurodiversity spectrum test, and the couple compatibility test. Each test is 20 statements and takes about six minutes (about ten minutes for the two-person test). Alongside them, our articles walk through the same ideas at reading pace.

How our tests are built

  1. 01 · Named dimensions, not verdicts

Every test scores a small set of named dimensions — for example, the attachment test measures Secure, Anxious, Avoidant, and Fearful. Your profile shows where you land on each, including blends, because most people are not pure types.

  2. 02 · Deterministic scoring

Scores and derived results (primary type, blends, constellations, couple alignment) are computed deterministically from your answers. The same answers always produce the same result — no randomness, no black boxes.

  3. 03 · Self-report, honestly labeled

All items are self-report statements on a five-point scale. Self-report measures capture how you perceive your own patterns — that is a real and useful signal, but it is not an objective verdict, and we do not present it as one.

What our tests are not

Every TypeWithin test is an education and self-reflection tool, not a clinical instrument. Our tests cannot diagnose any condition, are not normed against clinical samples, and do not detect disorders. A result describes a pattern in your own answers — nothing more. If distress is interfering with your life, a licensed professional is the right next step, not any quiz, including ours.

How our articles are written

  • Claims are grounded in published research, cited by author and year — for example, the four-category model of adult attachment used by our attachment test comes from Bartholomew & Horowitz (1991).
  • Terminology matches our instruments verbatim: if an article discusses a dimension or a result constellation, it uses the exact names the test uses.
  • Language is deliberately non-pathologizing. Differences are described as wiring and patterns, not disorders.
  • Every article states its limits: what the framework explains, what it does not, and where self-help ends and professional support begins.

Your data

Raw answers never leave your browser. Only dimension scores are sent to the server to produce your report, and reports can optionally be saved to an email-based account — no password required, and no account needed to take a test. Site analytics are aggregate and cookie-free. You can retake any test as often as you like. The privacy policy has the full details.

Where to buy

Tests are purchased through our Etsy shop — one purchase unlocks one test together with its personalized report, with no subscription. After buying, you unlock the test on this site with your Etsy order number and the email you used at checkout.
